From all accounts the 2016 Short Film Fest was a resounding success!!! My buddy, Chris Opper, told me that there were originally 177 films submitted from all over the world for this year’s festival!!!! The Film Fest Board members watched over 200 hours of films, and they finally whittled the show list down to 42 films. The festival kicked off on the Friday of Valentine’s Day weekend and on that Saturday there were sessions conducted throughout the day. About 150 people came to the Village Hall to watch films, and they voted “The Red Thunder”, which was directed by Alvaro Ron of El Capitan Pictures in Los Angeles, CA the winner of the coveted “Golden Coffee Mug” award. Congratulations to Alvaro and the entire cast and crew of “The Red Thunder”!!! I think I should become an actor. Wouldn’t it be cool to see a local guy on the big screen. . . I’ve certainly got the rugged good looks and charisma required to do the job. . .
There is a totally awesome show on display right now at the Meadows Art Gallery and it runs until March 12th. All the artwork which is on display was created by resident artists at SCAND or collected by community members. A number of art directions are included in the show, including watercolors, mixed media painting, acrylics, printmaking, pottery, stitching and fabric work, carved wood sculpture, paper sculpture, stained glass, collages, pencil drawings, ink drawings, and jewelry, and some of it will even be for sale. The Meadows Art Gallery is located at SCAND and is really easy to find. If you have any questions regarding the show please give Raoul a call. He can be reached at 920-854-4416.
Olga and I would like to invite everybody to join us at the the first annual Leap Day Booyah Bash, which will be conducted from 4:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. on Monday at the Sister Bay Moravian Church – 10924 Old Stage Road. The cost is really reasonable – $8 for adults and $5 for kids ages 6 – 12, but the maximum cost for a family will only be $24. If your birthday falls on Leap Day you’re really lucky ‘cause your dinner will be FREE!!! Live bluegrass music will be provided by 3/5’s Bedrock, and all proceeds will be used to help cover the costs associated with a mission trip to Moravian Ahuas Medical Clinic in Honduras. LET’S BOOYAH!!!!
The weather just hasn’t been cooperating, and, therefore, Joe and the guys out at the Sports Complex have closed the ice rink down for the season. Speaking of the weather, wasn’t Tuesday’s “freezing fog” awesome? The trees and shrubs in and around Sister Bay were absolutely beautiful and Olga and I got some great photos.
Work is continuing on installation of the new streetlights downtown. They look really nice. . . My buddy, Zeke, told me that he is still awaiting the arrival of employees from WPS to complete the installation of the meter base so the system can be charged, but that should be happening very soon.
Hey, the next time you’re in Sister Bay shopping why not submit an entry for the Ice-Out Contest? Don’t miss out on this great FREE opportunity to win some awesome prizes. Participating businesses host a voting box and donate a prize, and their customers are asked to fill out a form on which they list their name, phone number and the date and time of day they believe the ice will “go out” of the bay. For a list of participating businesses, please check the SBAA’s website – www.cometosisterbay.com . It’s my understanding that the latest “ice-out” date so far was May 2, 1972. Anybody care to take bets that it will be a lot sooner than that this year???
The Waterfront Oversight Committee was created to “look at where we’ve been and where we’re going”, and has been asked to make applicable recommendations to the members of the Parks Committee and the Village Board regarding utilization of the Village’s Waterfront property. The members of that Committee will be meeting at the Fire Station on Thursdays through March 17th at 4:00 P.M., and citizens are encouraged to attend the meetings to provide input.
Well, I guess that’s all for this week. If you know of any special events which will be occurring in the Village, or would like to have me publicize birthdays or anniversaries of folks who live or work here, please provide that information to my friends in the Village Office at least one week in advance of the special day(s).
Don’t forget that the deadline for payment of the Packer season ticket invoice is March 31st!!!
Have a great week!!!!!
