The new Village of Sister Bay Parks Maintenance Facility is set to begin construction this month. The existing storage building, currently located at the new site, is scheduled to be relocated this week to make room for the new building.
The current Parks Maintenance Facility is located adjacent to the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Library. The building, built in 1976, served as the fire station until 2003. When the new fire station was built on Mill Road, the old fire station became the temporary home of the Parks and Streets Department. The earliest community plan that discusses a new parks facility was adopted in 2006, and now almost twenty years later, the village will see a new structure, sized for growth, is to be built at 2160 Autumn Court.
The existing 7500 square foot facility is in irreparable condition, not large enough for the department’s operations, not near the majority of the Parks and Streets Department service area, located in an area of high congestion, and the property has a higher and better use. Plans call for the current parks building at 2313 Mill Road to be razed and the site potentially used for a new Post Office and parking.
Last week the contractor, Alliance Construction and Design, held a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off the project. The 11,400 square foot building was designed by the McMahon Group, with Architect Mike Martin serving as the designer.
